Home Course

When Joe and Barbara Pierce bought on Sasco Hill Road in Southport, they were lured by the views of the Country Club of Fairfield golf course and the harbor in the background. Joe, who grew up in Scotland, says, “This reminded me of Scotland.…It took me two years to find this site.” After two decades of living in a traditional Colonial in Weston, the Pierces had fine-tuned their dream house priorities.

As Joe explains, “I wanted something traditional, but with a contemporary flair. I had always admired the shingle-style architecture, but taking advantage of the water views was the priority. To his credit, our architect, Andrew Nuzzi of Stamford, picked up the whole concept and put it into his very first design. We have an open flow that feels like the outdoors is indoors within this house. I don’t care whether the weather is storm or snow, the views are terrific.”

In designing the 5,200- square-foot house, Andrew Nuzzi positioned the front door on the side of the house. He says, “Once you walked into the house from the entry foyer, you would see that the first floor is one big open floor plan with fabulous views from every room. The study/library and dining room look out on the golf course and the Sound, while the family room and kitchen have panoramic views of both the Sound and harbor.”

There is no formal living room. “We never used the living room in our previous home; we don’t need a room just sitting there looking pretty,” Barbara says. “This is a very calming house. Our interior designer, Catherine Cleare, used the colors of nature—beiges, soft blues and greens—to blend the inside and outside. If I am ever stressed, this house calms me.”

Space flows among the dining room, family room and kitchen. Barbara says, “I wanted easy living. I love to cook, and while I’m cooking, I can talk with others sitting at the big center island; and for once I have enough counter space.”
